When you stay in a hotel - Checklist of that hotel

Well-utilised Wall Space

Wide expanses of empty wall space are a missed opportunity. Instead, use the space for:

Wall hooks – These offer a place to hang coats, purses, and backpacks.
Benches – To provide additional seating and storage.
Luggage and Clothing Storage

More people equal extra luggage, and one luggage rack usually doesn’t meet the need.

More drawers – Consider additional dressers, or larger pieces of furniture with more drawers.
Platform beds with drawers underneath.
Child Safety Features

A room that is safe enough for a toddler to explore without danger is a relief for parents who want to relax.

Latches – These plastic locks keep drawers and cabinet doors securely closed.
Door locks – Chains or latches, placed above a child’s reach, prevent them from leaving the room or going out onto the balcony.
Outlet covers – Inexpensive plastic covers protect small fingers from electrocution.
Sleeping Solutions

If your property still charges a fee to rent cribs and play yards, consider the message this sends to families. Also consider these ideas offering a better night’s sleep for all:

Bunk beds – The ideal furniture arrangement for children with large families.
Privacy curtains – Minimise the sound and light between the adult and children’s sleeping areas.
A Better Bathroom

The best bathroom configuration for families includes a separate space for the sink and vanity, allowing two people to get ready at the same time. Even better; a vanity with double sinks. Other features which make a difference:

Lower countertops – Modern countertop heights are too tall for young children to reach the sink and faucet. A step stool under the sink can help, too.
Sink plugs – Families need to be able to fill the sink or bathtub to wash bottles, dishes, or clothes.
Retractable clothesline – A place to hang wet swimsuits or clothes.
Wall hooks – More people means more towels that need a place to dry.
Four sets (at least) of towels, pillows and plastic cups – Save your guests the call to housekeeping for these needed items.
Food Preparation and Eating Space

Feeding a family is a large expense on the road, and many savvy parents cut costs by bringing their own snacks and drinks from home. We love hotel rooms with kitchenettes, but these features are also important:

Microwave and refrigerator – These basic appliances offer the conveniences of home.
Eating space – One desk doesn’t offer sufficient seating. If additional space isn’t available, lap desks can serve this purpose.
Technology

Increasingly, children travel with just as many tech devices as their parents. The ideal room offers:

Free WiFi for multiple users
Charging stations with multiple outlets and USB ports.
Alarm clocks with iPod docks and a “white noise” option.
Above and Beyond

To truly stand apart, follow the lead of properties offering small luxuries which provide comfort and convenience, like:

Child-sized slippers and robes.
Treats upon check-in or delivered to rooms at bedtime, such as cookies and milk.
Complimentary laundry soap, if your property has laundry facilities.
Brochures and information about attractions and services that families want or need, such as nearby supermarkets and pharmacies, parks and playgrounds, and family-friendly restaurants.
